Downieville, Sierra, County California

Downieville, Sierra County, PO and county seat, 110 miles from Sacramento, is situated on the north fork of the Yuba River. This town, one of the oldest in the northern part of the State, still enjoys, a goodly portion of its former prosperity.

Many millions of dollars of the golden dust have been extracted from the placers in the vicinity and at the present Ume several valuable quartz leads are worked, which yield remunerative returns to their owners. It is reached by stage from the Pacific Railroad at Colfax, also by stage over a well improved wagon road from Marysville and by stage from the railroad at Truckee. The "Mountain Messenger, a paper of many years standing, is published weekly.
