Antioch, Contra Costa County California

Antioch, Contra Costa County, PO 25 miles east of Martinez. The town is pleasantly situated near the head of Suisun Bay, and is the depot for shipment of produce of a large and fertile agricultural section.

The event of 1874 was the loading of a large ship with wheat direct for Liverpool, thus proving the capacity of the harbor, and giving hopes of the future. The construction of the Kings River and San Joaquin Canal, for navigation and irrigation, is expected, with its terminus at Antioch, which would make this an important port.

The town enjoys considerable trade with the neighboring farmers, and also with the coal miners of Monte Diablo. The Antioch Distillery has been in operation some years, and a successful pottery is established, which manufactures large quantities of earthenware.

One newspaper, the Ledger, is published weekly.
