 Sacramento, Sacramento County California

Sacramento, Sacramento County, PO, incorporated, County seat, second city in size, and Capital of the State, is eligibly situated on the east bank of the Sacramento River, immediately south of the junction of the American. The river is navigable to this point for large steamers and sailing vessels 135 miles by water, and 81 miles by railroad, via Vallejo, from San Francisco, and light-draft steamers ascend to Red Bluff, 240 miles north. The Feather River, joining the Sacramento twenty miles above the city, is navigable to Marysville, and adds to the trade of the port.

This city is the chief railroad center of the State. The Central Pacific, one of the most important railroads of the world, running from ocean to ocean across the continent, has here its principal depot and workshops. Here, also, center the California Pacific, connecting with San Francisco via Vallejo; the Sacramento Valley Railroad, running to Folsom and Shingle Springs, in El Dorado County, 48 miles; and the California and Oregon Railroad, running north through the State via Marysville and Chico to Redding, 170 miles; and to Oroville, in Bute County, by the California Northern Railroad from Marysville. Stage routes lead to places where railroads do not touch, making this the center of travel and appropriately the capital of the State.

The locality was first settled upon by Gen. John A. Sutter, in 1839, who established Sutter's Fort, the most prominent, romantic and interesting feature in California's history. From this point were the parties who discovered gold on the banks of the American River, at Coloma, in 1848; and, therefore, when the great hegira commenced following the announcement of that remarkable discovery, the noted and generous hospice of the gallant Sutter became the objective point of the immigrants, and the welcoming shade furnished by the grand old sycamores and broad spreading oaks, with the verdant plains bordering the Sacramento, invited them here to rest, and thus naturally sprung the city.

The site was subject to annual inundation, but was so attractive otherwise, and the point so favorable to trade, that the floods were combatted by levees, and the streets raised above high-water mark, preparing the way for the handsomest and pleasantest city of the United States. The climate is warm in summer, though slightly tempered by the sea breeze, which ascends the river, preventing the extremes of heat felt in the interior of the great valley. Sacramento is one of the healthiest places of healthy California, paradoxical as it may appear, considering the swampy surroundings, the high temperature, and the tropical luxuriance of the vegetation, but experience and mortuary statistics have established the fact. The principal streets are well paved, and the buildings present a fine architectural appearance, some of the private residences being palatial in appearance, and surrounded by gardens luxuriant in the growth of plants of tropical and temperate climates.

The Capitol is the most attractive object in the city, and its lofty dome, rising 180 feet, is seen by the approaching traveler from every direction when many miles distant. From the summit of the dome is obtained a landscape view at once interesting, grand and incomparably lovely. A vast area of our glorious State comes within range of the beholder's eye, and never was richer or more attractive territory seen at a glance. It is in the center of the great Sacramento Valley 450 miles in length by 40 in width, of fertile soil and pleasant climate, of open plain and groves of oak, with long, winding rivers bearing fleets of vessels engaged in peaceful commerce. Along the eastern horizon stretches the rugged Sierra, its sides azure-hued by the distance, and its summits crowned with perpetual snow. Westward the Coast Range limits the vision with dim and hazy lines. At the feet is the fair city, with its broad streets embowered in trees, its lovely gardens, enlarging into farms in the surrounding country, all making a picture to be seen from but few Capitols of the world. Over this pleasant scene floats the beautiful flag of our country, of California's silk, grown upon the soil over which it waves, brilliant and strong, the gift of peaceful husbandry and industrious manufacture, typical of the State and a representative of its productions. This splendid structure was erected almost of about one and a half millions of dollars, and is a Capitol worthy of one of the most important States of the Union. All State officers have elegantly furnished offices in the building; the Supreme Court for cases north of San Francisco is held there, and the State Library is also in it. The Legislature meets biennially, and its sessions continue from December to April.

The public buildings, including Court House, Odd Fellows, Masonic, Good Templars and Pioneer halls, the churches, schools and others, are very fine. The State Agricultural Society holds its Fair at Sacramento in September of each year, and for this purpose has erected a large Pavilion for the exhibition of agricultural products, machinery, manufactures, etc., and in the suburbs has a park and race course for the exhibition of stock. These fairs are of great interest and largely attended. The Howard Benevolent Society is an institution of great merit, founded in the times of distress caused by conflagrations and overflow, and its benefactions are in amount and importance equal, if not greater, than those of any similar association in the State. Other societies of benevolence and sociality are numerous and well endowed. The public schools of the city are of every grade, including German and a collegiate course. The Grammar School building is among the finest educational structures in the State and vies with the Capitol in attracting the attention of visitors.

Here are the principal workshops of the Central Pacific Railroad Company, which exceed in magnitude and completeness anything of the kind west of the Mississippi. Prominent among its industrial enterprises is the Beet Sugar Manufactory, which employs a large number of men, and turns out 1,000 tons of coarse and refined sugar annually. A large brandy distillery is conducted on the Johnston patented process, which furnishes a market for grapes grown in the vicinity, and produces large quantities of grape brandy. Potteries, flouring mills, woolen mills, machine shops, and many other manufactories of an important character, are among Sacramento's industries. The city has two gas works, furnishing an abundant supply of illuminating fluid. The Holly Water Works, with its capacious building and superb machinery, is an attractive feature to visitors. Water is pumped from the Sacramento River at the rate of about 2,000,000 gallons daily, and forced through pipes to every portion of the city. The water is chemically pure and healthy, though riled and discolored by the washings from the mines in the mountains.

The newspapers rank among the highest of the United States, and are the Daily Record Union, Semi-Weekly Union, Daily See, Daily Evening Herald, Sacramento Journal, (a German tri-weekly,) Sacramento Valley Agriculturist, (weekly), The Rescue, a temperance organ, (weekly), and California Teacher, (monthly).
