Santa Clara, Santa Clara County California

Santa Clara, Santa Clara County, PO 3 miles northwest of San Jose, on the Southern Pacific Railroad , 47 miles southeast of San Francisco. The town occupies the lovely site of the Mission of the same name, founded by Father Tomas de la Piña, January 18, 1777, and formally dedicated by Father Junipero Serra, May 16, 1784. This continued a prominent and wealthy Mission for many years, and in 1834, 1,800 Indians were attached to it. Then it owned 30,000 head of cattle, 15,000 sheep, and 1,200 horses. At present it is one of the most pleasant places of residence in the State, and is a town of considerable business, distinguished alike for the salubrity of its climate, its quiet loveliness, and pleasant, home-like features. The College of Santa Clara, being the Mission in its present form, ranks as one of the first Academies in the world, possessing a rare and valuable library, and a most complete scientific apparatus. The University of the Pacific, also of Santa Clara, is an educational institution of a high order. Two rows of venerable and majestic trees border each side of a broad avenue, called the "Alameda," leading to San Jose, making a beautiful promenade or drive, and along it runs a street railroad connecting the two places. One newspaper, the Echo, is published weekly.
